A01 KEYNOTE: Hope Does Not Disappoint

Do we live today a life of hope as a disciple of Jesus? This keynote will help us discover the touchstones we desperately need as disciples today.

Fr. Agustino Torres, CFR, is a priest with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and the founder of Corazón Puro. He is the author of Prepare Your Heart, and serves as a retreat guide, spiritual director, and an international youth and young adult speaker. He is the principal author of REAL Formation, an inculturated Confirmation Program designed for Gen Z that forms the catechist and the young person. Torres hosts the EWTN TV shows ICONS and Clic con Corazon Puro (in both English and Spanish), and host of the National Eucharistic Revival podcast Revive.

A02 La Espiritualidad de Carlo Acutis

Este joven adolescente italiano ha reavivado la esperanza de la iglesia, especialmente de los jóvenes. En su forma sencilla pero profunda de vivir su fe, se ha convertido en un modelo para jóvenes y mayores. Aprendamos sobre los cinco puntos de su espiritualidad y veamos cómo podemos ayudar a nuestros jóvenes a profundizar estos puntos en sus propias vidas.

Alejandro Barraza, es actualmente el coordinador de la Pastoral Juvenil Hispana en la Diócesis de Sacramento, CA. Ha servido en el área de jóvenes varias veces como director parroquial, coordinador diocesano y a nivel nacional por los últimos treinta años. También ha participado del Congar Institute como presentador de temas relacionados con la Pastoral Juvenil y Pastoral Hispana. Durante la pandemia emprendió una serie de entrenamientos para lideres parroquiales sobre la gran oportunidad de adaptar nuestros ministerios a servir en el continente digital después de desarrollar diferentes programas virtuales para el ministerio. El invitar a los jóvenes a una vida de servicio es su pasión.

A03 Esperanza En La Oración: Un Enfoque Interactivo

Ven y responde el llamado universal a la oración a través de un enfoque interactivo. Comenzaremos nuestro tiempo juntos con una oración de acción de gracias con palabras clave en lengua de señas americana. Tomando de la tradición católica y de la vida de diferentes santos para profundizar nuestra vida de oración diaria mientras que enseñamos a los niños y estudiantes de primaria a hacer lo mismo, nos servirá de apoyo al implementar herramientas y actividades prácticas que involucran todos los sentidos y modalidades. Una oración de alabanza con música y movimiento nos servirá de conclusión.

Ana Barraza es conferencista internacional bilingüe, maestra titulada de Educación Especial y catequista máster con certificaciones en Evangelización Digital y Emprendimiento Digital Católico. Ella forma parte del Loyola Press Speaker Corps, es líder del Ministerio para Católicos con disCapacidades en la Diócesis de Sacramento y líder catequético de Formación Adaptativa en la Fe.

La señora Ana ha prestado sus servicios por más de 30 años en diversos ministerios como líder catequético diocesano y parroquial, directora de catequesis, coordinadora de Pastoral Juvenil, directora de retiros y coros y evangelizadora digital.

A04 Caminos de Esperanza: Metodologías Pastorales que Transforman

Este taller ofrece herramientas prácticas y metodologías pastorales inspiradas en el tema “La esperanza no defrauda” (cf. Romanos 5,5). Se presentarán enfoques pedagógicos y estrategias que fomentan una cultura del encuentro, el acompañamiento y la resiliencia espiritual en nuestras comunidades. A través de casos concretos y dinámicas participativas, exploraremos cómo diseñar experiencias pastorales que siembren esperanza activa en contextos de dificultad y cambio.

Dr Gerardo Salazar es México-americano, originario de Los Ángeles California y San Luis Potosí México. Casado por 21 años con Nancy con quien tiene 10 hijos. Hijo de padres campesinos migrantes. Su madre lo consagró a San Gerardo cuyo nombre significa “espada de Dios” y a la Virgen del Carmen. Tiene una Licenciatura en Periodismo y Comunicaciones, una Maestría en Teología y Ministerio y un Doctorado en Ministerio en Teología Pastoral. Ha sido consultor de teología para la publicadora William H Sadlier. Ha sido profesor de teología en Universiy of St Thomas y Catholic International University. Fue por 9 años subdirector de la Oficina de Evangelización y Catequesis en Arquidiócesis de Galveston-Houston. Su proceso de conversión comenzó en mayo del 2007 a los pies del Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves en Belleville Illinois.

Joey Gutierrez es catequista y ministro de jóvenes con más de 23 años de experiencia en el ministerio parroquial. Cuenta con una Maestría en Estudios Teológicos/Ministerio Pastoral y actualmente cursa el Master of Divinity (MDiv.) en el Graduate Theological Union en Berkeley, California. A lo largo de su trayectoria, Joey ha servido en diversos comités y ha ocupado múltiples cargos de liderazgo en la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio, TX. Antes de mudarse de Texas, participó activamente en la Academia para el Ministerio Eclesial Laico, contribuyendo a su renovación, y fue miembro destacado del Comité Arquidiocesano de Liderazgo Juvenil. Fuera del ámbito ministerial, disfruta caminar acompañado de su schnauzer Sofía, leer, nadar y tocar el piano y el órgano en la Misa. Porqué caminamos con María y José? Viviendo el Adviento y preparándonos para recibir en todo tiempo a Jesús en nuestros corazones. Conoceremos el verdadero significado de las posadas navideñas, que no solo se celebran con gran gozo y alegría en México, sino también en otros países de habla hispana. Veremos como algunas de nuestras tradiciones tienen un significado profundo, la conexión con nuestra fe y cómo se adaptan a las costumbres y tradiciones de las comunidades actuales, recordando valores como la humildad, la generosidad, la caridad, la hermandad y cuále es el significado e ideales de nuestro caminar con María y José.

Zulma “Zully” Téllez. Tiene maestría en catequesis, directora espiritual, licenciada en diseño industrial, directora de catequesis, coordinadora de Orden de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos. Sus ministerios están enraizados en la espiritualidad franciscana, proveyendo cuidado pastoral y acompañamiento espiritual para los marginados. Ha acumulado numerosos certificados en teología, incluyendo justicia restaurativa católica del programa de graduados de la Universidad de Santa Clara y exorcismo y oración de liberación del Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum en Roma. La ciudad de San Francisco le otorga un certificado de honor por servir a parte de la comunidad experimentando indigencia. Zulma fue nombrada delegada del V Encuentro y delegada de “Discerning Deacons” peregrinación a Roma, es una conversación viva y activa en nuestra iglesia, expandiendo el rol de liderazgo de las mujeres en la iglesia específicamente para restaurar a las mujeres en el diaconato. Su pasión se encuentra en la evangelización que continúa trayendo inmenso amor y alegría por las escrituras, cuidando la creación de Dios en conjunto y trabajando para cumplir la misión cósmica de la iglesia.

A07 Del Examen al Discernimiento: Acompañando a las Familias Hacia la Preparación Sacramental

La preparación para los sacramentos no puede reducirse a exámenes o memorización. La Iglesia nos invita a un proceso de discernimiento que involucra a catequistas, padres e hijos en el reconocimiento de los signos de la fe. Esta presentación ofrecerá enfoques pastorales y prácticos para ir más allá de las listas de verificación, enfocándonos en la oración, la participación en la liturgia y la creciente relación del niño con Cristo. Al acoger el discernimiento, los líderes parroquiales y los catequistas podrán acompañar con mayor fidelidad a las familias en la preparación de los niños para recibir los sacramentos como verdaderos momentos de gracia.

Graciela (Grace) Garza-Ayala sirve actualmente como Directora de la Oficina de Evangelización y Formación de Fe en la Diócesis de Stockton. Aporta casi dos décadas de experiencia en el ministerio: diez años como coordinadora y directora parroquial de formación de fe, y nueve años a nivel diocesano. Graciela tiene una Maestría en Estudios Teológicos de la Jesuit School of Theology en Berkeley, con especialización en Ministerio Intercultural.
Casada por casi 38 años, ella y su esposo han sido bendecidos con tres hijos, tres nietos y dos más en camino.

She is also a Master Catechist with the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of Oakland.

Throughout her career, she has been a passionate advocate for faith-based education, always striving to enrich her students’ spiritual and academic lives.

B11 The Death of the Catechist?

This is the best of times and the worst of times in parish faith formation. It’s the best of times because we have more resources than we could ever use to teach others about the faith. The number of videos, webinars, podcasts, audio books, electronic books, physical books, etc. available today is more than someone could read in a lifetime and so much of it is well-made, curated, excellent content. But it’s also the worst of times, because more and more catechists are opting to show a video by a famous Catholic speaker instead of preparing the talk or witnessing the faith themselves. Catechists in the modern parish are facilitators of discussions, video presenters, and book passer-outers. We recruit them by begging for an hour a week. But the faith is caught not taught. Disciples are made, not by awesome videos, but by true encounters with Jesus Christ our Savior through the life of disciples of Jesus. This workshop will explore the qualities and qualifications we need in catechists moving forward and how to recruit them.

Deacon Kevin Staszkow worked in parishes for 17 years as a youth and young adult ministry coordinator, director of religious education, director of RCIA and director of adult faith formation. He has served the Diocese of Sacramento since 2008 in a number of roles including Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, Director of Evangelization and Catechesis, and Director of the Department of Family, Faith Formation & Young People. He has been married 20 years to Paula, ordained a deacon for 7 years and is a father to teenage twins, Rachel & Sarah. He holds a BA in Philosophy from UC Berkeley, and an MA in Pastoral Ministry from Holy Names University. His diaconate formation included extensive study of scripture, liturgy, theology and church history through the University of Notre Dame.

B12 The Trinity and the Image of God

The workshop is designed to present the following notions on the image of God, the Trinity, Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas’s concepts and descriptions about God, and why this topic matters. The workshop hopes to apply the Trinitarian Imago Dei to our human dignity, relationality, and our daily ethical actions.

Oliver Galang Meneses, Ph.D., is a teacher and school administrator with a strong foundation in philosophy, education, special needs, and catechesis. He earned two bachelor’s degrees, Secondary Education (English) and Philosophy, from Don Bosco College in Canlubang, Laguna. He completed his Master’s degree in Special Education at the Philippine Normal University in Manila, and earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management (Magna Cum Laude, with Research Distinction) from La Consolacion University Philippines in Malolos, Bulacan. Dr. Oliver Meneses also completed his catechetical program sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco and was awarded the title Master Catechist by the California State Catholic Bishops. Currently, he is a teacher and Campus Minister at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco.

Joe Melendrez has forged a unique path to becoming one of America’s most exciting Catholic performers. At age fifteen, Joe was featured on MTV and developed a love for performing. Later that year, on a Teen A.C.T.S. Retreat, Joe encountered the awesome love of God. It was then that he decided to dedicate his life to sharing the Good News. Joe shares the Gospel in many unique ways, from his development of a faith-based clothing line, God Swagg Apparel, his release of four major Catholic hip-hop albums, to sharing the winnings from a college Chipotle contest (a year of free burritos), as a means to evangelize to different people with each meal!

Joe’s BA in Religious studies from the University of Dayton has led him to become a Religion teacher and Youth Minister for over a decade. In addition to his work in Catholic education, Joe’s electric ministry of music and evangelization has taken him to Europe, Africa, Australia, Mexico, South America and all across the USA. C02 Hope in Prayer: An Interactive Approach

Come and answer the universal call to prayer through an interactive approach. We will start our time together with a prayer of thanksgiving with American Sign Language keywords. Drawing from Catholic tradition and the life of different saints to deepen our daily prayer life while teaching children and elementary students to do the same will be a springboard to implement practical tools and activities to engage all senses and modalities. A prayer of praise with music and movement will serve as a wrap up.

Ana Barraza is an international bilingual speaker, certified Special Education teacher, and Master Catechist with certifications in Digital Evangelization and Catholic Digital Entrepreneurship. She is part of the Loyola Press Speaker Corps, the head of the Ministry for Catholics with disabilities for the Diocese of Sacramento, and an Adaptive Faith Formation catechetical leader. Ana has been in various ministries for more than 30 years as diocesan and parish catechetical leader, youth and music minister, DRE, retreat and choir director, and digital evangelizer.

C03 Dios a Través del Canto

Este taller está diseñado para inspirar a los cantores y músicos litúrgicos a ofrecer lo mejor de sí mismos a Dios a través del canto. Profundizaremos en el papel del canto de comunión y ofertorio como eco vivo del Evangelio, capaz de tocar los corazones y elevar el espíritu de la asamblea. Reflexionaremos también sobre la importancia de la interpretación: ¿cómo deseas que el pueblo escuche tu voz y tu mensaje? A través de ejemplos prácticos y principios pastorales, descubriremos cómo el canto se convierte en un puente entre la Palabra de Dios y la comunidad reunida.

Francisco Contreras se formó durante seis años en el Seminario de Guadalajara, Jalisco. Ha dedicado catorce años a la docencia en su pueblo natal, en los niveles de secundaria y preescolar. El Padre. Gerardo Vázquez es párroco de la parroquia San Francisco de Asís en East Palo Alto, California, y presta servicios en la Arquidiócesis de San Francisco. Ordenado hace tres años, anteriormente se desempeñó como vicario parroquial en San Francisco y en las parroquias misioneras de San Francisco (San Pedro, San Carlos Borromeo y San Antonio de Padua), además de asistir a las Misioneras de la Caridad. Kathleen Cory began her journey in Theology of the Body (TOB) in 2010, and knew then that she would never stop sharing this profoundly beautiful, life-changing message. C09 From Testing to Discernment: Accompanying Families Toward Sacramental Readiness

Readiness for the sacraments cannot be reduced to tests or memorization. The Church calls us to a process of discernment that engages catechists, parents, and children together in recognizing the signs of faith. This presentation will examine practical and pastoral approaches for moving beyond checklists, focusing instead on prayer, participation in the liturgy, and the child’s developing relationship with Christ. By embracing discernment, parish leaders and catechists can more faithfully accompany families in preparing children to encounter the sacraments as moments of grace.

Graciela (Grace) Garza-Ayala currently serves as Director of the Office of Evangelization & Faith Formation for the Diocese of Stockton. She brings nearly two decades of ministry experience—ten years as a parish coordinator and director of faith formation, and nine years at the diocesan level. Graciela holds a master’s in theological studies from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, with a concentration in Intercultural Ministry.
Married for almost 38 years, she and her husband are blessed with three children, three grandchildren, and two more on the way.

El papa San Juan Pablo II, en el Directorio General para la Catequesis (1997), subrayó la urgencia de una Nueva Evangelización, recordándonos que “grupos enteros de bautizados han perdido el sentido vivo de la fe o incluso no se reconocen ya como miembros de la Iglesia, llevando una existencia alejada de Cristo”. Más recientemente, el papa Francisco señaló a la catequesis kerigmática como el corazón del nuevo Directorio para la Catequesis, enfatizando que el kerigma no es simplemente la transmisión de doctrinas, sino un encuentro personal con Dios vivo. En esta misma línea, los obispos de Estados Unidos proclamaron la catequesis evangelizadora como “la visión de formar discípulos cuyas vidas reflejan su comprensión, conversión y compromiso con la fe”, ofreciendo un camino claro en el Manual del Proceso de Acompañamiento Catequético. En este taller profundizaremos en el desarrollo de la catequesis evangelizadora y en los pasos concretos que podemos asumir como Iglesia para avanzar en su implementación pastoral.

Olga C. Islas es Directora Asociada para la Formación de la Fe en la Diócesis de San José. Su servicio a la Iglesia ha sido amplio y diverso, combinando la educación, la catequesis y el liderazgo pastoral. Fue maestra en la Escuela Católica de San Patricio, en el centro de San José, desde el año 2000, y posteriormente directora de la misma escuela entre 2011 y 2024. Previamente, durante tres años, fue directora y propietaria de un preescolar con 22 niños, mientras acompañaba el inicio escolar de su hijo. De 1986 a 1996 dirigió la actividad catequética en la parroquia franciscana de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, en el este de San José, comunidad que sigue siendo su hogar parroquial hasta hoy. En el ámbito académico, cuenta con una Maestría en Catequética de la Universidad de Santa Clara y una Maestría en Educación de la Universidad Walden. Además, posee una Licenciatura en Ingeniería Nuclear por la Universidad Estatal de Arizona, con la cual trabajó en la industria nuclear durante los primeros siete años de su carrera profesional.

Es graduado y profesor del IBTP (Instituto Bíblico Teológico Pastoral), el Instituto Serra de Ministerio Catequético y la Escuela de Ministerios Pastorales de la Diócesis de Oakland. Moving beyond mere translation, this discussion will highlight the necessity of an inculturated approach that honors the distinct voice and perspective of this generation of young people. He will also address the particular inculurational needs of Gen Z and the ways that technology can be incorporated into catechesis. Fr. Agustino Torres, CFR, is a priest with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and the founder of Corazón Puro. He is the author of Prepare Your Heart, and serves as a retreat guide, spiritual director, and an international youth and young adult speaker. Fr. Jerome A. Magat, SThD. is currently serving as vice-rector, a formation advisor and professor of moral theology at St. Patrick Seminary and University in Menlo Park, California. Fr. Magat, is a member of the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia (ordained in 2002) serving in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He is a 1995 graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A. Government) and holds four advanced degrees in theology including a Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Theology (summa cum laude) from Mt. Kevin is St Francis of Assisi (Oakland Diocese), a former youth minister, and now supports Youth Ministry across the Diocese of San Jose in his new role as Associate Director of Youth Ministry. His extensive 7 years of ministry experience in our parish’s programs have given him a better vision for how to support the Young Church of Today on a diocesan scale.

Kevin is also the host of a podcast that is popular among our youth in the Diocese, called Modern Day Disciples! Along with his co-host, Ana Fuentes, they aim to share stories of those living out God’s love in order to empower our Young Church to do the same. In his free time, Kevin loves spending time with his wife, Jennyrose Jalique, travelling to Disneyland, and convincing everyone he knows to watch Ted Lasso on Apple TV. Steve Do is currently the Coordinator for Youth & Young Adult Ministry at the Diocese of Sacramento. He has more than 20 years of leadership experience in community-driven non-profit organizations, including the Director of youth and young adult ministries at the Diocese of San Jose. He is a relational minister working directly with those he ministers and supporting those who are chartered with being the face of a ministry. His skills in communications and design skills help ministries reach our young people. He also has developed events and videos that showcase the work done among Northern California dioceses, including San Francisco. SFARCH has worked with Steve on the Faith Formation Conference when it was done jointly with San Jose as well as with OnFire and Youth on a
Mission.

Joseph Nufable

Joseph Nufable is Coordinator for Youth Ministry/RCIA for the Diocese of Oakland! Joseph joined Oakland on August 2, 2021. You may know Joseph from his years as the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries at Holy Spirit Parish in Fremont ,or more recently, as Pastoral Associate for Evangelization and Discipleship at the Cathedral of Christ the Light Parish. Joseph holds a bachelor’s from USF and is working toward his master’s degree in Catechetics and Evangelization from the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
